All About GMOs

(Genetically Modified Organisms)

More and more you hear about the debate whether or not genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are safe for people to eat. It is likely that your political affiliation, your occupation, your upbringing or even where you live will determine your viewpoint on whether or not GMOs are safe.

Our position on GMOs comes from our own personal experience and that of our clients as to how consuming food that is genetically modified affects our bodies. We believe that the food that we eat is different than the food that we used to eat just a generation ago. Science tells us that the food is different as well.

Our bodies simply have not evolved quickly enough to know what to do with food that is chemically altered. Our immune system is designed to attack anything that is foreign or harmful. So when we consume food that is ‘unnatural’ or modified to the point where our bodies don’t recognize it, then our body actually starts to attack ourselves. This is the heart of autoimmune disorders. Our immune system is attacking our own bodies.

GMO stands for “genetically modified organisms”. They refer to plants or even animals whose genetic make-up has been changed. It is important to note that genetically modifying technology is different than hybrid technology, which has given us fruits like seedless watermelons and seedless grapes.

The GMOs that we are referring to and those that we are adamantly against, are those plants that have been modified in order to resist the very powerful weed killers and insecticides that have plagued farmers since the beginning of time. By modifying the plants to resist the poison used to destroy insects and weeds, the farmer can see more yield on the crops that are planted and there is less loss from crop damage.

There is endless supply of reports and articles on GMOs, Monsanto and pesticides that support the evidence that GMO foods are not good for us. In fact, they are toxic. GMOs and pesticides have been linked to the dramatic increase in Autism and other disorders and diseases. It is this reason why most developed countries other than the US, has banned GMO food from being in the food supply for their country’s people.

It is estimated that 80% of all processed foods that we consume in the US includes GMO foods and ingredients.

One of the biggest issues that we have with GMO food is that while it is becoming easier to spot if you know what to look for, it is still very difficult to avoid food that is not natural or that has not been modified by science. Most foods that are processed or packaged contain GMO food. Currently in the US, food manufacturers are not required to tell consumers if the food they are purchasing or consuming contains genetically modified food.

Because of this, all of us consume some amount of GMO food without even knowing it.

As a private chef and food consultant, Chef Beau only uses organic, non-GMO food and ingredients. The more natural that we can be, the more ‘real’ the food is that we eat and the more in balance we can be with our own bodies, the greater the health benefits we will reap.

GMO Facts and Stats

Genetically Modified Food in the US:

95% of sugar beets
88% of corn
94% of soybeans

This means that unless you are buying ORGANIC, anything you eat with sugar, made with corn or has soy in it is genetically modified!

The dramatic rise in Autism has been linked to the use of Monsanto’s Round Up weedkiller. In 1970, 1 in 10,000 children were born with Autism. Now it is 1 in 68.

If the current trend continues, it is predicted that by 2025, HALF of all children born will have Autism.

While it is difficult to avoid GMOs because of the lack of government regulations and labeling requirements, there are companies that provide GMO-free ingredients. It takes research and dedication on your part but isn’t your health worth the effort?
